Taxable Sales and Index of Regional Economic Activity
Taxable sales data for various Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA's) are popularly used as one indicator of regional economic activity. These data are derived from sales tax returns remitted to the state Department of Revenue each month. Users of this data are strongly encouraged to read the discussion relating to the source data to aid in the understanding of what the data represents.
Notice of Data Revision
The definitions of the various Metropolitan Statistical Areas listed in the tables have been revised to conform to the November 2008 definitions. Historical data has also been revised according to the November 2008 definitions, regardless of whatever previous definitions an MSA may have had in the past, so that the data is consistent over time in what it represents. Please see the discussion of the data for the revised definitions. Also, the Index of Retail Sales has been rebased to December 1999. This will change the values of the Index but does not affect the percentage changes reported in the table.
